Dreams are powerful. They direct our gaze. They help us imagine how life could be different. They lead to changes and growth. They offer hope. The Coffee Oasis began in 1997 as a dream to “make a difference” in the lives of hurting kids.
Many kids on the streets can’t imagine life past their day-to-day struggle for survival. To dream of having a loving family or safe home, a college degree or steady income, seems like a waste of time if not an impossibility. Those who could be most encouraged by dreaming of a different life often find it the most difficult.
Community members like you fill a vital role in our kids’ lives. They dream for them. They envision how different life could look like for a lonely young man or woman, then decide to help make that dream a reality.
“I would like to see families and communities that provide both positive love and support as well as clear and strong boundaries and guidance for young people.” – Chief Strachan, Bremerton Police Chief
This month, we asked some individuals: “What is the dream you have for youth in your community?” Their answers ranged from dreams of job opportunities to successful marriages to the ability to find hope.
“My dream is for them to feel secure, valued, and cherished as a vital part of our future.” – Robert Gelder, Kitsap County Commissioner
“My dreams for the youth in the city of Bremerton are their secure feelings of love, success in learning and appreciating their education, and knowing they are safe to engage in both.” – Mayor Patty Lent
Read our Autumn Newsletter to hear their answers, and add some of your own! You will also find stories of dreams coming true for youth who wanted to express themselves through music, or escape a cycle of bad choices.
Thank you for being a part of a community that makes a difference!
