About 5-6 years ago, Rhonda Hamlin learned about The Coffee Oasis when someone spoke at her church. She owned a local business–The Art of Crunch–that was well known for its biscotti, crackers, and other baked goods. She had been looking for a way to give back and volunteer through her business and thought The Coffee Oasis would be a good fit. She heard about the auction committee and decided to see what it was about.
At first, Rhonda helped with auction procurement and donated desserts for the dessert dash. In the last few years, she began to make creative, elaborate charcuterie boards as hors d’oeuvres for Coffee & Corks and fundraising events for The Coffee Oasis Tacoma. “I love whatever fun things look colorful on a board like meats and cheeses.” She incorporated the crackers she makes and people began to recognize them.
Rhonda recounts some moments that stand out to her from volunteering. She remembers when the news came through that the building in Tacoma was purchased, the renovations began, and then the grand opening. “To be a part of the process was pretty cool.” In another moment, the first year she volunteered, a young lady spoke at Coffee & Corks. “I was so proud of her because she ended up being able to work and get her own apartment.”
Learning about youth homelessness has changed her perspective. Rhonda reflects on a firsthand experience when she stopped at a gas station while doing an early morning delivery. “There was no one around and it was dark. Out of nowhere this kid, 16 or 17, came out of nowhere and was so sad. He asked if I had any money or anything to eat. I got in my car and left, but I was so frustrated I didn’t do anything. I went to the kitchen and went back with a sandwich, but I couldn’t find him. I imagined if that were my son, it broke my heart.”
Thank you, Rhonda, for using your gifts and talents to give back. Rhonda opened a small storefront off 6th Avenue in Tacoma about two and a half years ago and would love to have you stop by to say hello.
