Jacob completed The Coffee Oasis job training and internship program in 2020, which has led him to long-term employment and success.

He initially heard about the program through a friend. He shared why the program appealed to him, even though he was initially apprehensive.

“I didn’t have any real job experience. I was kind of scared going into it. I felt like I wasn’t good enough or able to do what they wanted me to, so I had a lot of anxiety. I went into the course to get my feet wet and get more experience.”

After completing six job training classes, he selected St. Vincent de Paul as his internship site, because he liked the assistance they offered in the community.

Jacob felt supported by The Coffee Oasis staff member who taught the job training classes and coordinated internships.

“Susan was awesome. She helped me make a resume, go through that learning process, and learn that I’m just as capable as anyone in getting a job. I loved going to see her when I was checking in during my internship.”

During his 100hr internship, Jacob learned how to cashier, manage donations, price items, sort clothing, and straighten up shelves. He did such an excellent job that he was offered employment right away. He enjoyed cashiering and learned how to do it well, eventually teaching others.

He was made head cashier for a couple years, then, in February, he was promoted to Assistant Manager.

As part of his job position, Jacob enjoys working in the assistance office to help people meet specific needs such as help paying utility bills, hygiene kits, diapers, or clothing.

“If I could recommend every youth to go through The Coffee Oasis job training and internship, I would. It opened big doors in my life. The Coffee Oasis gave me tools to excel.”

Sean, the Director of Operations at St. Vincent de Paul, has been a strong mentor and support in Jacob’s life.

“I didn’t like being a supervisor at first, but then Sean kept pushing me slowly and surely. He saw the potential in me and never gave up on me. I appreciated how Sean took me under his wing and gave me a shot.”

Jacob is passionate about his work and how he is able to help others.

“I hope people will give more to each other. We’re there to help people who can’t afford to go shopping, so we always try to keep our prices reasonable. Our store mission is to help people find linens, clothing, pots and pans, baby clothing. We need more help in the community. We’re stronger as a community.”

Now, in his current position, Jacob is able to mentor other Coffee Oasis youth who come through the job training program.

“Our success rate with Coffee Oasis internships is really high. I would always recommend the job training program to anyone who feels like they’re not enough. We’ve had a few kids who have come through who don’t think they can do well, but they do.”

Jacob is grateful for the opportunities provided by The Coffee Oasis.

“I would encourage people to support Coffee Oasis—to provide a good place for kids to hang out. It makes me feel good that there are people who do care for those who don’t have a good support system.”
