Youth Feeling Hopeless:

74% of 12th graders in Washington State reported feeling nervous, anxious or over the edge or not being able to stop or control worrying according to the 2021 Healthy Youth Survey. 45% reported feeling sad or hopeless for two weeks or more in 2021. [1]

Cheyenne* was in a crisis. She was dropped off at The Coffee Oasis with all her belongings and nowhere to spend the night. She had no adult support and no one to rely on. When she arrived at The Coffee Oasis, a Crisis Services Navigator greeted her warmly and welcomed her in from the cold night. They were able to find her a place to stay and a case manager to work with. Cheyenne’s Crisis Navigator connected her with mental health support services and a long-term housing solution.

The Coffee Oasis is committed to providing crisis care for all youth (ages 13-25) in Pierce and Kitsap Counties 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Through our Crisis Text Line and Crisis Navigation Team, The Coffee Oasis has received and responded to 3,311 texts and met with 211 youth in crisis so far this year. These youth are navigating depression, suicidal ideation, and broken relationships. They are reaching out for help. We are committed to listening first and responding with compassion. Often a crisis text is the first step towards healing.

Here are a few texts we received this year:

The feeling of hopelessness, it feels like my life is falling apart and that I’m hitting a dead end. I’m scared of what will happen when I reach that end.

I am homeless and seven months clean. I don’t want to relapse. I’ve come far but recently lost my somewhat stable living situation.

Thank you so much for checking in. He’s doing a lot better now. He’s meeting with his youth pastor for lunch tomorrow. He doesn’t plan on running anymore.

This year, we invite you to help us respond to every text. We can’t do this alone. Your support makes it possible for us to offer every youth an opportunity to thrive, a compassionate adult to talk to, and a safe place to sleep each night.

It will cost $307,000 in 2023 to ensure any local youth in crisis can reach us 24/7.

For $35 per hour, you can help us keep our Crisis Text Line open 24/7. Will you partner with us to care for, support, and encourage local youth?
