“Without The Coffee Oasis I wouldn’t have the job I have now. I would have given up on my mental health and everything if it weren’t for the help of The Coffee Oasis.”
– Cody

As a teenager, Cody struggled to find the support he needed. He lived on and off the streets starting at age 16. When he was not on the streets, he found himself couch surfing. He stayed with a friend from school for a few months, but his time there eventually ran out. Trying to figure out a plan, his friend knew about The Coffee Oasis and connected him with the youth shelter.

Cody stayed at the shelter almost a year and had a positive experience. When asked what he loved about The Coffee Oasis, he expressed gratitude for the staff and atmosphere:

“The staff has basically become family. They’re always smiling. This is the only shelter I’ve been to where you know the staff cares about you and they’ll do everything they can to see you succeed.”

While staying at The Coffee Oasis, Cody completed the job training program. He expressed this was helpful in learning computer skills, money management, and customer service. “The job training program was fun. It was slow paced so it was easy for me to work with. It helped me get a job.” After completing the job training program, he was able to secure a job at Safeway. However, his time at the shelter was not without challenges as he struggled with suicidal thoughts and depression.

“They really helped me out with my depression and let me know I’m not alone. It’s a wonderful place to get help. If I hadn’t been connected with The Coffee Oasis I would probably be dead.”

Cody moved into a transitional housing program in Seattle, while looking to secure permanent housing. He found employment at a  job he loved as a baggage handler for the SeaTac Airport and was even able to adopt one of the security dogs from the airport, who also serves as an emotional support animal. Reflecting back Cody expressed, “Without The Coffee Oasis I wouldn’t have the job I have now. I would have given up on my mental health and everything if it weren’t for the help of The Coffee Oasis.”

Cody is now engaged, and he and his fiancé have recently relocated to Arizona. He continuously looks for ways to help others. “My hobbies are helping out. I want to be a step ahead to pay it forward to others.” He has a bright future ahead and wants to encourage others to not give up.

Will you help provide shelter and safety for youth by giving monthly?
