Charles lived with his mom until his living situation became hectic. “My mom had gotten into a relationship and he wasn’t a good guy.” He moved to Washington to live with his grandfather during his senior year of high school where he attended an International Baccalaureate program and played football. However, it was a long commute to school and he sometimes had to walk back to the park and ride in the rain. When he turned 18, he decided to transfer to a local high school.

Charles found The Coffee Oasis and became close with the drop-in center supervisor. When he found himself in need of a temporary place to stay, he knew where he could go. “I stayed in the youth shelter when I was 20, because I felt like I was in a toxic situation at home… I stayed at the shelter for about a month. I felt safe.”

“Coffee Oasis gives me peace of mind. It’s like a little safe haven–an oasis. It was properly named.”

He was able to move back in with family where he completed a job corp program and received financial aid to attend community college. He excelled in and enjoyed his graphic design and science classes. Since completing his AA, Charles still comes down to the Coffee Oasis.

“I like the resources at Coffee Oasis. If I need toothpaste or a toothbrush or anything like that, Coffee Oasis has my back. It makes for less things for me to worry about.”

Charles is thankful for the mentors that have helped him grow and is thankful for the donors and volunteers. “Their philanthropic efforts create a safe haven from a lot of trauma. It’s a safe space. The staff are friendly.”
