“I think The Night of Achievement does a wonderful job at highlighting the accomplishments of youth within our community. I believe that it makes the youth feel seen and recognized for the growth that they’ve made. Everyone has one thing in common; we are all part of the community. Feeling the presence of the youth celebrated while surrounded by the people that they love is beautiful and touching. Feeling seen and acknowledged is important and I think The Night of Achievement does a great job and is always an event I look forward to.”
– Dakoyta, youth
During this year’s Celebration of Achievement event, staff and volunteers celebrated the accomplishments and successes of 190 youth in Kitsap and Pierce Counties. Churches and volunteers set the tone for a fun evening with balloon arches, live music, festive decor, photobooths, and dinner for all.
Every day at The Coffee Oasis, staff and volunteers work hard to make sure youth who often go unnoticed feel seen, listened to, encouraged, and appreciated. This night is a celebration of the relationships built and successes youth have worked toward all year long.
One youth shared, “not many in my life celebrate me, so it’s nice to be at a place that recognizes all the small things we do and the growth we have made.”
This year, at multiple locations, there were featured youth speakers who shared their stories and experiences at The Coffee Oasis. Payton had a touching and emotional speech that moved many staff to tears. He now has his own tiny house and is stably housed.
Austin, shared about his experience coming to Washington homeless and hopeless. Through case management and mentorship to keep him accountable, he has been able to find a steady job, purchase a car, and find housing.
One parent shared about what this night meant to their family, “I’m really grateful for this. I try my best to help my daughter, but with my disabilities and hers it’s really hard. Since she has started coming here, she is so much happier and lately she has been making so many new friends and talks a lot more to me. She’s so much more confident.”
We are grateful for the many churches, volunteers, and guest speakers who made this event possible. Thank you for being a part of this special day!
Some of our volunteers, staff, and speakers reflected on the evening:
“Getting to celebrate both big and little wins with our youth is such a privilege and delight. I love getting to experience the “secondhand joy” of family and friends who come to celebrate too. The Night of Achievement is one of my favorite Coffee Oasis events!” – Seana, Volunteer
“This event is so amazing. I feel really honored to be a part of something like this and I hope that things like this [Celebration of Achievement] continue. Young people need this kind of support around them.” – James Sellars, NKHS Principal
“I really enjoyed seeing the clients who no longer utilize the Port (Tacoma drop-in center) as frequently come in and see their old friends and catch up. This means they have all moved on from a shared low point in their life and have all grown in many ways.” – Daniel, Shelter Manager
