“I was grateful for this kind of service and event. This is the only place that I could come to get a meal. I don’t have family that I can celebrate with, but I am grateful for y’all and being that for me”
– Connor
Each year, The Coffee Oasis hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for teens and young adults in the community. For many, this is their only Thanksgiving. This year, 113 teens and young adults attended The Coffee Oasis drop-in centers from Tacoma to Poulsbo to share a Thanksgiving meal together. Volunteers worked hard to transform The Coffee Oasis cafes into festive spaces and create a time of celebration. After dinner, the festivities continued with games, raffles, door prizes, and karaoke.
Many youth shared what this event means to them:
“It felt really sociable and warm. Very inviting. It kind of gave me a sense of community getting to see so many people. My favorite part was the games and interactions between people.” Tobi, 20
“My favorite part is the dinner where we all sit and catch up with everyone. I think this is like another home to me because all my family is not in this state. The night went wonderfully and it’s always a big hit with me and my kids.” – Sierra, 25
This event would not be possible without the many hands who prepare meals, take time to set-up and clean up, serve dinner, and welcome each individual who walks through the door. We are grateful for the time you’ve taken to care for teens and young adults in your community!
One volunteer, Linda, shared that, “this was my first Thanksgiving event with The Coffee Oasis. It was heartwarming to see so many young people excited and grateful for a delicious meal with their friends. My favorite part of the evening was when they shared their best Thanksgiving memories. Many of these memories included their grandparents. It was a special time and I am grateful I was able to help out.”
