It’s easy to take our dreams for granted. The ability to pursue dreams is a privilege when we aren’t in survival mode–not knowing where to sleep, when we will eat next, or how to pay rent. Dreams provide a spark of hope for the future and guide us in the decisions we make to get there.

The Coffee Oasis started off as a dream in 1996, with the beginning of “teen night” providing a safe place for youth and young adults to go. As foster parents, and working as a police chaplain, Dave and Cindy Frederick were exposed to the pain of youth caught in the cycle of depression, incarceration, poverty, homelessness, and addiction. From their dream, The Coffee Oasis and the local community have helped break this cycle for thousands of youth.

The Coffee Oasis continues to thrive because of the integral role the community plays in meeting youth where they’re at and dreaming with them–dreams of going to college, stable marriages and relationships, life-giving employment. We asked local community leaders of their dreams for youth and here are some of their answers:

“My dream for our youth is for them to discover their unique purpose in the world and pursue what truly brings them joy. My dream for them is to be curious about the world and one another, uncover their individual callings and paths that make them feel most alive and fulfilled – to take responsible risks, embrace their authentic selves and the authenticity of one another, and chase their dreams!” James Crawford, Bremerton School District Superintendent

“I dream of the kids in our community growing up in love and safety and having everything they need to thrive!” Daniel Frederick, Executive Director of The Coffee Oasis

“I dream that every youth in our community would know what a gift they are to the world and they would find those who see that gift and help them grow.” Jeri Delaney, Kitsap Youth Programs Director at The Coffee Oasis

“That the youth in our community feel supported by our community so that they can successfully pursue their dreams.” Rob Putaansuu, Mayor of Port Orchard

“We, at the city of Poulsbo, work to create a community where children can achieve their dreams, supporting them so they can grow and thrive.” Becky Erickson, Mayor of Poulsbo

“I dream that every Kitsap kid can grow up happy and healthy, surrounded by supportive and encouraging teachers, coaches, mentors, and loved ones.” Greg Nance, State Rep for Washington’s 23rd Legislative District

Thank you for dreaming with us and paving the way for youth to dream again! It is only through the collective efforts of our community members that The Coffee Oasis is able to offer programs for youth to find shelter, job training, mentorship, and more.
