“My case manager has helped me with budgeting my food stamps and budgeting my other expenses to help me spend my money better. I try to come down to The Coffee Oasis almost every day.”
– Alec
Alec became homeless in September 2023. He had lived with various friends, but nothing was a permanent solution and he struggled to find stable employment. He had a seasonal position at Costco, but when it ended, he wasn’t able to continue his employment. Currently, he is staying at the Beacon Center, a young adult shelter for individuals ages 18-25, but comes to The Coffee Oasis for resources and community.
In working with his case manager, The Coffee Oasis has introduced Alec to different resources like Work Source. Work Source has helped Alec obtain his forklift certification and get a month long bus pass and reduced bus fare. “My case manager has helped me with budgeting my food stamps and budgeting my other expenses to help me spend my money better. I try to come down to Coffee Oasis almost every day.”
“It’s impacted my life for the better. It’s introduced me to people I never thought I’d be able to make friends with who have helped my mental stability become much better.” He is able to access resources such as snacks, showers, and laundry and is able to find entertainment through board games and the Nintendo switch.
Now that he has his forklift certification, his Coffee Oasis case manager helps him look for jobs. He is also there to provide insight into managing relational conflict. “If I’m having a falling out with somebody he helps me look at it from a different perspective to resolve the situation. He’s a voice of reason.”
Alec is in the process of finding a more long term housing solution. “I went over to Comprehensive Life Resources and got into the Coordinated Entry which helps with housing. They help pay for housing for one year and during that one year I have to find myself a job and save up to help pay rent.” In the future, he hopes to have his own place, whether a house or apartment, and would like to get a car since he already has his driver’s license.
Together, the community of resources in Pierce County have provided a safety net for Alec to work towards his goals and thrive.
