Kota* never attended school and education at home was minimal. He grew up learning just the very basics of things. Much of his childhood was spent playing video games and staying inside. To work on his GED, he began attending Olympic College, which was his first experience in a classroom. “The first day I was there I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. It’s been challenging at some parts but very rewarding. It’s been a very big confidence boost in various aspects of life.  If I’m able to take such a big leap I know I can do other things.”

While taking classes at OC, he found out about The Coffee Oasis from his teacher, Cindy Frederick, who founded the nonprofit with her husband Dave in 1997. “She was absolutely incredible. I was thankful to have her to work with, and she was so easy to work with.” Towards the end of his class, he decided to go check out The Coffee Oasis and met with a job training coach and case manager.

Kota worked hard to complete The Coffee Oasis job training classes and build a resume in preparation for a 100-hr internship. He interviewed with The Coffee Oasis Burwell Cafe Manager and did an excellent job.

I learned how to work with people that I didn’t know. I’ve done work before, but it was only with family members. It was helpful to get comfortable in an environment working with other people. I learned to be more vocal, because I’m usually a quiet person. I was bummed when it ended.”

Kota expressed that The Coffee Oasis has had a positive impact on his life.

“I liked the atmosphere of it. It was very welcoming and nothing that was overwhelming. It was like Goldilocks–one was too hot, one was too cold, but this was just right. I come to the drop-in center for community and have been able to get a pair of shoes. I like to socialize and meet other people. It’s been really helpful in being a lot more social of a person. It’s very nice to see how far I’ve come.

Kota wants to remind others that come to The Coffee Oasis to have faith in yourself.

“That’s the main thing I’ve learned in the last year and a half. Having more faith and confidence in myself has helped tremendously.
