Holidays are often a tough time for the young people who come to our centers. This year was no different for Jim*. Jim has been moving around for quite some time–living in and out of shelters, cars, on the streets, and pretty much anywhere they can. Jim first heard about The Coffee Oasis from a partner who was in a similar situation. This was a while ago and since then Jim has been back and forth. This year, they attended the Christmas party even though they were apprehensive about the event. “Holidays don’t mean much” is something they might say.
However, as they came in, they realized this place was different. They loved the food, the tri-tip was amazing, and they couldn’t help but load up their plate 2 or 3 times. As people mingled, they sat next to their current partner and just soaked in the atmosphere–the décor, the lights, the people, and the good cheer!
They participated in a game even though it was not something they would typically do. They ended up winning a Coffee O gift card. They sang songs together, though they didn’t feel like singing along the whole time; it was an experience they hadn’t had in a while. They heard the Christmas story, delivered by one of the Coffee O’s founders who was able to share the history of these Christmas parties and what they’ve meant to them.

The night went on and presents were shared and unwrapped. They were shocked to get exactly what they requested. The feeling that things were different here was proven true.
This was a place that no matter your history, no matter who you are, no matter what you think you deserve–you belong. And knowing that made all the difference this Christmas.
Thank you for providing 347 youth like Jim with presents and the experience of Christmas this season! You make all the difference!
