The proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” has stuck through the years because it’s true! When an entire “village” of people invests in their young people, that generation has a much greater chance of experiencing full and purposeful lives than if they did life alone.

This holds true at The Coffee Oasis. Lasting change in kids’ lives only happens when staff and community members love, give, and work together. The month of May held rich examples of our own dear Kitsap “village” pooling its abilities and resources to invest in their at-risk youth. Whether it was giving a monetary gift or offering volunteer hours, we saw you and other partners supporting youth in extraordinary ways!

MAY ROUND-UP REPORT

1. $25,481 was given to the Oasis Youth Programs through the Kitsap Great Give giving event on May 2! That amount allows the Oasis youth shelter to care for 6 youth for 4 months, providing them a safe place to live, love and community, and support in gaining stability and independence in life. A huge thank you to those who gave and to you for being an advocate for The Coffee Oasis! We are surrounded by compassionate people whose generosity is making a tangible difference in kids’ lives.

2. 12 people have signed up to be mentors through this spring’s Love Local campaign! This means 12 more youth like M.S. will receive friendship, guidance, and support from a caring adult. M.S. is hoping to become employed and move into a place of her own. She will now have a mentor to encourage her towards those goals, giving her a much greater chance of success! We are excited to see the impact that increased mentorship has on the youth, as well as on our awesome volunteers!

3. 3 youth from the Port Orchard Oasis Center helped build cottages for low-income or homeless in Kitsap! The youth spent a Saturday with Oasis staff and other project volunteers helping build. It’s beautiful to see our youth grow to believe they have something to give back to the community that has invested in them. And it’s doubly exciting to see them give back to others who are experiencing homelessness! If you want to learn more about the project, Kitsap Sun wrote a good article about it here.
