Lilith’s Story: Achieving What Seemed Impossible

– May 15, 2017 –

Lilith was born in Port Townsend and as she grew up, her family moved a lot. Her mother struggled with drug abuse for a year. During this time, Lilith took it upon herself to watch over her four siblings to make sure they were safe. “I felt like I was taking care of them so much. It made me feel more like a mother than a sister.”

By 10th grade Lilith’s family was fairly stable and living in Port Orchard. She checked out the Oasis Youth Center when her boyfriend began going. Gradually, the center became her place. “After moving here, the Oasis Center was a great way to meet people and a great place to have fun without getting into trouble.”

After a little while, life became more shaky for Lilith. She began failing most of her classes. Though she was friendly and outgoing, she felt lost in such a large school. Then for a period of time she was homeless and couch surfed with friends.

The Coffee Oasis was there for Lilith during these years. Her teacher connected her to the Oasis Assist class. During the class, a group of struggling students met with an Oasis outreach worker for support and accountability. Lilith loved the class and even brought new students with her! It was fun and she felt seen and supported. The Oasis Center continued to be a safe and loving place while her housing situation stabilized.

In 11th grade Lilith transitioned to Discovery Alternative to finish school. This was a big switch for her. A surprising thing helped her transition: a job internship! Lilith decided to do a barista internship at the Port Orchard Coffee Oasis. She surprised herself, and “did things I never thought I could, like make REAL coffee!!!” The skills she learned during the internship helped her feel more confident and able as she began attending Discovery.

Now, something is happening this spring that a year ago seemed impossible: Lilith is graduating! The support of The Coffee Oasis as well the staff at Discovery has made her feel as if people truly want her to succeed. This belief in her pushes her forward in her dream to be a hair stylist. It is a gift to believe in youth like Lilith. Join us!
