“We love you, we want you here.” Becky’s* case manager and others at the Coffee Oasis had told her this many times over the past two years. But then all of a sudden she was gone.

When you meet Becky, you are struck by her bubbly personality and big heart. For two years she has been a lively part of the Oasis Center. Wanting to get a job, she began taking Oasis job prep classes in March and signed up for case management, faithfully making all her meetings.

Then, she was gone. She stopped coming to her meetings and her school attendance was spotty. Frustration at home led to her getting kicked out. Oasis staff continued to reach out to her.

Becky’s motivation was slipping. “I want to see you go to school. How can I help you?” asked her case manager. Becky was only a few credits away from graduating. Once in a while she came to the Oasis Center, but still did not commit to any positive changes.

Slowly, step after step was made. Despite intermittent school attendance, Becky did receive her diploma. She reconciled with her parents. As she began coming more regularly to the Coffee Oasis, she listened and then acted on the guidance given her. Now, she is active in case management and begins her job internship in July!

After being loved by people at the Coffee Oasis for two years, Becky feels safe. She trusted that any guidance from her case manager came from a place of true concern for her. It didn’t drive her away, but drew her in. Two years of relationship laid the foundation to help her with 4 months of crucial decision making.
